Turners Solicitors LLP carries on the practice started by John Mayer Burrow Turner in 1898 and for many years was known as J M B Turner and Co.
The firm was formed in the affluent Victorian seaside town of Bournemouth and John Turner's career was a distinguished one in which he made a considerable reputation as an advocate and was twice president of the Bournemouth and District Law Society. He died in 1938, leaving his son George at the head of a thriving firm.
After the upheavals of the Second World War George Turner continued in partnership with Paul Day and the firm became known as Turner & Day.
In 1950 they were joined by Malcolm Kirby, but in 1953 Paul Day left and the firm reverted to its old name of J M B Turner and Co.
In 1964 the firm purchased 1 Poole Road where it has its offices today. This move prompted a period of expansion and diversification. At the time the firm was mostly engaged in Property, Finance and Probate work but an increase in Litigation and Criminal work brought further expansion and susidiary offices were opened in Wimborne, Poole and Broadstone.
In addition to providing a full Private Client and Commercial Law Practice the firm also maintained a busy Legal Aid Practice providing Criminal Law, Family Law and General Civil Litigation services to all comers but with changes to eligibility and cut backs in Legal Aid funding the firm decided that it could no longer support publicly funded work at the expense of its Commercial and Private Client practice.
As a consequence the case for branch offices disappeared and the firm now practices only from its site at 1 Poole Road but with good IT, dedicated and hard working staff and dynamic Partners the firm continues to thrive. Its emphasis now lies in providing high quality legal services to Private Clients and Businesses specialising in Property (Commercial and Residential), Civil and Commercial Litigation including Divorce, Company, Commercial and Employment Law and Wills, Probate and Trusts.
Turners today is a leading provincial law firm offering services which its founder would scarcely have imagined.
